Even after I found and purchased a tweed guitar cable, I see the need for a wireless setup for my bass rig. Images of crowd surfing notwithstanding, being free of the cable demon has merit.
My recent purchase of a Spectraflex braided guitar cable has led to a discussion of a future purchase - in a different direction. I bought a 14 foot long Spectraflex cable (love it, BTW), and as a result, I am tied to a smallish radius around my amp. This has caused an issue on larger stages and times where my presence is expected out among the audience or the front of the stage.
While I prefer being behind the curtain I don't have that big an issue being front and center. Well, at least front. Center is for the spot light and my default statement of "If I wanted the spotlight, I would have played guitar" still holds true. I actually prefer hanging out at the back of the stage next to the drummer. Not only does it allow for a closer interaction between the drummer and I, it lets me stay in the sweet spot of my bass tone coming off my amp.
However, I like the idea of being free of cables under foot and having the freedom to wander around the stage and out in/with the audience. And...even with wireless, I can still hang out with the drummer.
So...I am researching a wireless setup for my bass.
A quick search of TalkBass and other forums pulls back a variety of threads but the bottom line for most of them centers on the following three companies for wireless systems for instruments.
Shure
Sennheiser
Line 6
These look to be in the "sub $1000 category" in which, until I get an endorsement deal, I live.
There are other companies in this price range but the general feeling I get from various forums is these other brands are geared for the general consumer level.and not the working professional musician. While I don't think of myself in that way, I do like my equipment to be designed with that in mind. That's why I don't play a Hondo bass **.
I have a recommendation from a guitarist friend who uses a Line 6 unit and loves it - so I am leaning towards the Line 6 G50.
I have a few more discussions with other band members and players before I pull the trigger, but that doesn't stop me from day dreaming of a stage dive into a sea of blonde, 25 year old female fans.
Of course, it that were to happen, a call to 911 would follow as I would need help scraping up all the 25 year olds off the floor after jabba squished them.
** apologies to any player using a Hondo guitar or bass. I'm sure it rocks and you look good playing it.
