I was reading about travel basses in Bass Player and I remembered this short little bass. While I don't travel as much as I used to, having a small bass to kick around at home or take on vacation would be very good for practice and relaxing.
The bass and site reviewed by BP was travelerguitar.com. I love the no head stock look. I've tried a few times in the past to have various builders build me a bass without a head stock. The usual response is the lack of hardware at the nut and the expensive of the bridge with built-in tuners. I've never played one so I can't comment on the feel. I do remember reading somewhere that it helps to have a slight flange at the end to keep the neck hand from sliding off the end.
The Ashbory looks perfect for traveling but it's a four string.

I don't want to get my hands used to a four string again. Players better than me might not have an issue switching between 4, 5, and 6 strings, but I find I cannot - at least not without thinking constantly on what I'm playing next and where my hands are and on what string.
So, I will still look for a headless bass - I will not give up that search. But it must wait - my next bass will be normal looking. I'm planning to trek to Rob Allen's sometime in the next few weeks to play some of his basses. I plan to bring my own rig to compare and play thru. I'll have a write up of that road trip in a few weeks.
