Time to restring the Warwick. The bright, piano-like tone of the strings sound pretty cool as single, long ringing notes, but I find I miss the warm and subdued tone of the Thomastik-Infeld Flats.
I ordered a set of Thomastik-Infeld JF345 strings for my Warwick. I've been unhappy with the tone of the Warwick stung with a set of round-wound strings (the JF345s are flat-wound). Its not the fault of the strings, its just not what I'm looking for. I want a warm, woody tone and the brightness of the round-wound strings doesn't give me that - I find I am EQ'ing the heck out of both the bass and amp to try to get to the sound I want.
I had a set of JF345s on the Warwick previously but a popped D string made me change the entire set.
The only downside to the JF345 is their expense. At the time of this post, they are going for $106 on amazon and a few other direct sale online vendors. I went through amazon, of course. I could grab a "normal" set of bass strings at GuitarCenter or Musician's Friend for probably $30. But the tone of the JF345 is what I'm after.
I really like the JF354s - they kept their tone a long time and I ran both the bass and amp pretty much flat with them. The Warwick is a warm sounding bass anyway so it was easy to get a decent sound - I just needed to keep the metallic clang when slapping at bay.
I'm not a traditional slapper (slap with thumb pop with finger) but I do slap with my thumb. I get a little more thump when I slap (compared to finger style) but I don't want any clangy over-tones that come with slapping. I use slapping and finger style together/alternating and I want as close to consistent tone as possible between the two. I developed this alternating "cheat" back when I wasn't playing everyday and my hands would get tired during four hour gigs - so I started alternating the thumb slapping as a means to give my fingers a break for a song or two.
