I've been researching various octave pedals for my piccolo strung Warwick. My thought has been to attempt, through the use of an octave pedal, to use the piccolo string setup as a normal bass in a band situation.
I enjoy the piccolo strings and my practice time with them has greatly improved my cordial work and ear for melodies. Of course, I had no ear for melodies and my "cordial work" was comprised of memories wearing corduroy pants in 7th grade - so any improvement was easy.
What I want is the best of both worlds - the ability to write original material and work on my solo bass project with the bass, with the ability to use the bass as a bass in a band situation. A dream, I know.
I spent some time in Guitar Center over the holiday weekend playing with the POG2. I brought in my Warwick and they set me up with an amp. I also grabbed a 4 string P-bass as a reference and alternated the Warwick and Fender.

What I found was when playing finger style, the POG2 was fantastic. It has a two octave voice in both directions - up and down. Each octave, in addition to the original signal, has its own slider control. When the octave+2 and octave+1 voices were added to the original signal, the sound was fat and complex. It was exactly what I was looking for.
However, when I started slapping, things went south. Tracking was spotty and not fast enough. I don't think this is particular to the POG2. I think this is how all octave pedals will function when faced with slapping. Well, let me rephrase that, the two pedals I have experienced show this issue (Boss Harmonist and the above POG2). Granted my sample size is small but my gut tells me my original plan will not work.
However#2, in the spirit of keeping the dream alive, I will get my hands on a few more pedals and see if I can find a way.
To be clear - the POG2 is a good pedal. It has a lot of features. I played with the Attack slider and pulled up almost a cello or organ sounding tone - with a delay. Very interesting. It has presets and other functions but these were not traits I needed so I didn't fully explore them.
Related to this, I have been emailing the guys at godlyke about the Great Divide. They said they are in development with v2 of the pedal. I was added to the wait/contact list and will be informed when the device is launched.
