In a follow-up to my 5 string bass neck comparison post, I received feedback from both Warwick and Warmoth.
Warwick responded to my request to build a Thumb bolt-on 5 string bass neck matching the specs to my 1989 Warwick Thumb neck. Their response was they do not build bass necks for any other bass bodies - only for a Warwick body - therefore, no neck- only sales.
Strike one.
Warmoth responded to my request to build a bass neck with the specs of a Warwick Thumb 5 string using a Warmoth 5 string deluxe jazz heel. Their response was, while they can do custom work, they cannot match the Warwick neck specs.
Strike two.
The strikeout I'm trying to avoid is having/using two basses with different neck specs. I am a big believer in playing one bass and getting to know that one bass very well. If I can get two basses with the same neck specs, I can interchange the basses and not lose muscle memory or comfort-ability.
I'm left with two options.
Option one - find a luthier who will build me a Warwick Thumb spec neck that I can bolt on any body I choose.
Option two - buy another Warwick Thumb.
I guess there is a third option - put on my big boy pants and stop whining about having two basses with different next specs.
If money was not an issue, option two would happily be the call. As it is, I still might search for used Thumb basses.
Option one has merit and Tom of TG Guitars is a luthier I know and trust - so a discussion with him is planned.
But I suspect option three will rule the day. I will probably end up grabbing an already built bass neck from the Warmoth stock showcase and have Tom replace the current fretless neck on my Warmoth with the new fretted neck.
I was just hoping to avoid switching pants.
