I have a set of Alien Ears on order. I expect them within a month.
I've been messing around with my planned monitor scheme and have been alternating the stock iphone ear buds with some cheap over the ear headphones. I've noticed a big difference in sound quality. I am running my Warwick directly into the Alesis iMultiMix8-USB with the USB line from my laptop to the Alesis as well. I then take the headphone out from the Alesis.
Its really a great way to practice with various YouTube videos and just jam with background music.
Anyway, the iphone ear buds distort when I get on it on my bass - especially the low end. The "normal, everyday" over the hear headphones sound fantastic.
I know the Alien Ears are triple driver and are sold as "for bass players and drummers" but I am now worried they will not give me the clarity and distortion-free tone I am looking for.
For my speaker-less scheme to work, I MUST have good tone in my ears. I, like most musicians, play to hear themselves. If my bass sounds distorted, weak, or thin - this will not work. I want to reproduce my tone as close as possible to my rig's tone. I want to hear the lows and the complexity of my tone.
Time will tell of course - when the Alien Ears arrive, the testing will continue. But I am searching Amazon for musical in-ear monitors.
So, adding more fuel to the discussion...
Sennheiser-IE80 - $349
Klipsch-X10i - $299
Shure-SE535 - $455
Westone-4R - $499
There are lots of others of course - I pasted only the four I felt gave a good overview of the product type.
But looking at the prices, I am starting to second-guess the Alien Ear purchase. I think I spent a little over $400 on the Alien Ear. That seems low now compared to the ear bud variety. Most of the reviews of the above four state the bass frequency sounds fantastic - so maybe I am worried for nothing.
I guess I'll see when the Alien Ears get here. Fingers crossed.
